How to use Twirla

A new patch is applied and worn for 7 days for 3 consecutive weeks ( change to a new patch every 7 days). No patch is worn during Week 4, when you might likely will have withdrawal bleeding . Only wear 1 patch at a time.

What is Twirla Birth Control Patch?

Twirla is a combination birth control contraceptive patch with 30 mcg estrogen and 120mcg levonorgestrel for women with a BMI less than 30 kg/m2.

Twirla may not be as effective in women with a BMI of 25 kg/m2 or more. It lowers the risk of becoming pregnant by preventing the release of an egg from the ovary (ovulation). In addition, combination birth control also thickens the cervical mucus,helping to block sperm from getting into the uterus and getting to the egg.

Do not use Twirla if you smoke cigarettes and are over 35 years old. Smoking increases your risk of serious cardiovascular side effects from combination hormonal contraceptives (CHCs), including death from heart attack, blood clots or stroke. This risk increases with age and the number of cigarettes you smoke.
