What is Lybrel Birth Control Pills?

Lybrel was a combination extended-cycle birth control pill (oral contraceptive) containing two types of hormones, estrogen (ethinyl estradiol) and progestin (levonorgestrel). These hormones effectively make your body think it's pregnant, so a real pregnancy won't occur. Read More

How to Use Lybrel

Lybrel is super easy to use!

Simply take your Lybrel pill every day, at the same time each day for 28 days. Most women find that taking Lybrel before bedtime or with your largest meal of the day helps reduce nausea and other side effects. It is recommended to take your first active pill the first Sunday after your period begins.

If you do miss one active pill , take two pills as soon as you remember. Then, continue to take one active pill for the rest of the pill pack. If you miss two active pills in a row take two pills per day for two days. However, if you miss three active pills in a row, do not take the missed pills. Instead you should use a back up birth control method for at least 7 days. Note that you may experience some breakthrough bleeding or spotting if you miss three pills in a row.

Remember that Lybrel and other hormone based birth control cannot be used to prevent HIV infection or other sexually transmitted diseases. In order to prevent sexually transmitted infections, always use condoms when having sexual intercourse. If you do have unprotected sex, you will need to take emergency contraception.

Lybrel Dosage

Lybrel birth control pills have two main active ingredients: Levonorgestrel (progesterone) [90 mg] and Ethinyl Estradiol (estrogen) [20 mcg].

Benefits of Lybrel

Lybrel Side Effects

While usually mild and temporary, undesired Lybrel side effects have been reported, including nausea, vomiting, acne, weight gain, or problems with contact lense use.

One of the major differences with Lybrel compared to other birth control pills is that you won’t have a period while using it, although you might notice occasional spotting. Many women love the freedom of not getting periods (yes, this is considered safe!). GOOD Lybrel side effects have been reported, too, including less painful periods, less breast tenderness, and less nausea compared to other birth control pills that have placebo or “inactive” pills.

Frequently Asked Questions

DOES LYBREL CAUSE WEIGHT GAIN?

Some women noticed mild increases in weight while taking Lybrel or its generic equivalent Amethyst. But this weight gain is usually mild and temporary. It’s often because of water retention.

ANY OTHER IMPORTANT INFORMATION ABOUT LYBREL?

If you have any questions about whether a birth control pill like Lybrel is right for you, talk to your doctor or one of our Pandia Health Patient Care Advisors. Always go over your current list of medications, including supplements and drugs (including prescription, over-the-counter, and recreational) to make sure they’re safe to take with your birth control. Some medications could interact with birth control pills and lower the contraceptive efficacy, or lead to other adverse reactions.

WHAT PRECAUTIONS SHOULD I BE AWARE OF WITH LYBREL?

Some women shouldn’t take hormonal birth control pills if they have a history of medical conditions like cancer, heart disease, high blood pressure, blood clots, or diabetes. Smoking while taking birth control dramatically increases the risk of serious adverse reactions to birth control, including blood clots. You shouldn’t smoke anyway, but especially not while taking birth control.

Consult with your doctor before taking Lybrel if you are breastfeeding.

All medications come with a small risk of an allergic reaction, including itching or a skin rash. If you notice these symptoms while taking a medication like Lybrel, stop taking it right away and call a doctor. Seek immediate medical attention and call 911 if you experience signs and symptoms of a severe allergic reaction, like trouble breathing or swelling of the lips and tongue.

HOW EASY IS IT TO GET LYBREL?

You can’t get the brand name Lybrel anymore because it was taken off the market. This wasn’t because there were concerns over its safety or effectiveness, but simply because of the financial impact of having cheaper alternatives. That generic alternative of Lybrel is called Amethyst. Amethyst is easy to get at any typical pharmacy, but you’ll need a prescription for it. Give Pandia Health a try if you’re concerned about chatting with your personal doctor or if you’d like to explore the convenience of online birth control prescription and delivery!

Our licensed and board-certified physicians work in several states, and we offer most forms of private insurance. If you won’t be paying with insurance or don’t have insurance, you’re in luck! We offer plenty of flexible payment options to improve your access to the birth control you want and need.

HOW DOES LYBREL WORK?

Lybrel works like other birth control pills, namely by preventing the release of an egg from an ovary (ovulation). It also makes vaginal fluid thicker, so it’s harder for sperm to reach an egg. Plus, it’ll make changes in the uterine wall so that if an egg does become fertilized by sperm, the egg will be less likely to attach to the uterus (womb).

Unlike other birth control pills, Lybrel and its generic equivalent Amethyst only contain “active” pills and no placebo or “inactive” pills. This makes it a great option for women who are interested in#PeriodsOptional lifestyles. Other types of extended-cycle birth control pills include Seasonale, Jolessa, Quasense, and Seasonique. Check out our blog post here for more information.

To take Lybrel’s generic equivalent Amethyst, simply take one pill every day at the same time. Most birth control manufacturers recommend taking your pill at night or with a large meal if you have concerns about nausea. When used correctly, birth control pills are up to 99% effective at preventing pregnancy!

DOES LYBREL BIRTH CONTROL CAUSE INFERTILITY?

Lybrel (rather, its generic equivalent) doesn’t cause infertility. Research even suggests birth control pills may reduce the risk of certain types of cancer, including ovarian cancer and endometrial cancer. While your fertility will temporarily be affected while taking Lybrel, it should return to normal soon after stopping Lybrel, and you can get pregnant right away. Most women notice normal fertility and normal periods within about one to three months after stopping Lybrel.
