Lybrel is super easy to use!
Simply take your Lybrel pill every day, at the same time each day for 28 days. Most women find that taking Lybrel before bedtime or with your largest meal of the day helps reduce nausea and other side effects. It is recommended to take your first active pill the first Sunday after your period begins.
If you do miss one active pill , take two pills as soon as you remember. Then, continue to take one active pill for the rest of the pill pack. If you miss two active pills in a row take two pills per day for two days. However, if you miss three active pills in a row, do not take the missed pills. Instead you should use a back up birth control method for at least 7 days. Note that you may experience some breakthrough bleeding or spotting if you miss three pills in a row.
Remember that Lybrel and other hormone based birth control cannot be used to prevent HIV infection or other sexually transmitted diseases. In order to prevent sexually transmitted infections, always use condoms when having sexual intercourse. If you do have unprotected sex, you will need to take emergency contraception.
Lybrel birth control pills have two main active ingredients: Levonorgestrel (progesterone) [90 mg] and Ethinyl Estradiol (estrogen) [20 mcg].
While usually mild and temporary, undesired Lybrel side effects have been reported, including nausea, vomiting, acne, weight gain, or problems with contact lense use.
One of the major differences with Lybrel compared to other birth control pills is that you won’t have a period while using it, although you might notice occasional spotting. Many women love the freedom of not getting periods (yes, this is considered safe!). GOOD Lybrel side effects have been reported, too, including less painful periods, less breast tenderness, and less nausea compared to other birth control pills that have placebo or “inactive” pills.

Some women noticed mild increases in weight while taking Lybrel or its generic equivalent Amethyst. But this weight gain is usually mild and temporary. It’s often because of water retention.

Lybrel works like other birth control pills, namely by preventing the release of an egg from an ovary (ovulation). It also makes vaginal fluid thicker, so it’s harder for sperm to reach an egg.
