What is Loryna Birth Control Pills?

Loryna is a “low dose” combination oral contraceptive pill (OCP, birth control medication, birth control pills). It prevents pregnancy by preventing the release of an egg (ovulation), and thickening the cervical mucus, blocking sperm from getting into the uterus and getting to the egg. Loryna is also prescribed to: treat acne, reduce the risk of ovarian cysts (as in polycystic ovarian syndrome [PCOS]), treat painful or heavy periods, and more. Read More

How to Use Loryna

Loryna is super easy to use. Simply take one pill every day, at the same time each day. Many women find that taking Loryna before bedtime or just after their evening meal helps reduce nausea and other side effects. After taking 21 days of white active pills, you’ll switch to seven pink-colored ones. These are inactive pills with no hormones that are there to get you in the habit of taking your pill every day.

Loryna Dosage

Loryna uses a blend of two hormones, Drosperinone 3 mg (progesterone) and Ethinyl Estradiol 20 mcg (estrogen).

Benefits of Loryna

  • Periods get lighter. If you are usually a 7 day person, it goes down to like 5 days. If you use 5 pads/tampons a day, it goes down to 3.
  • Loryna has one of the strongest progesterones out there and has a diuretic effect which means it can make you pee. This is good if you are concerned about water retention and weight gain.
  • You can use it to make #PeriodsOptional. Just skip the last week of pills and go straight into the next pack. See our CEO/Founder’s talk here.
  • Reduce the risk of ovarian cysts (as in polycystic ovarian syndrome [PCOS])
  • Improves acne.

Loryna Side Effects

The risks are very low, but some women have experienced unwanted side effects when taking Loryna. Minor ones include breast tenderness, headaches, nausea. Positive side effects include reduced acne, fewer mood swings, and lighter bleeds. The chances of serious side effects are extremely unlikely, but some cases have been documented, such as blood clots in the head (a severe new headache, causing double vision, or stroke), blood clots in the chest causing severe shortness of breath, blood clots in the abdomen (causing abdominal pain), blood clots in the leg causing leg swelling and pain.

These may sound scary, but remember — they’re very rare.

Frequently Asked Questions

WILL LORYNA CAUSE WEIGHT GAIN?

Very few women experience weight gain when taking Loryna. Loryna has a diuretic effect, meaning it helps shed water from the body.

IS LORYNA A LOW DOSE BIRTH CONTROL?

Yes, although depends on your definition of low dose. In the old days, pills had 110mcg of estrogen and then 50 mcg. So when research says low dose, they mean anything under 50 mcg of estrogen. When we say low dose at Pandia Health we mean anything less than 30 mcg of estrogen which is NOT good for your bones if you are under the age of 30 years old. We recommend that you use at least 30mcg if you are under 30 years old. We recommend that you use at least 30mcg if you are under 30 years old.

IS LORYNA BIRTH CONTROL THE SAME AS YAZ?

Yes, both medications have the same active ingredients (Drosperinone 3 mg and Ethinyl Estradiol20 mcg).

IS LORYNA BIRTH CONTROL THE SAME AS GIANVI?

Yes, they are equivalent generic in fact. Both medications have the same active ingredients (Drosperinone 3 mg and Ethinyl Estradiol20 mcg).

HOW DOES LORYNA WORK?

Loryna uses a blend of two hormones, estrogen, and progestin, to make your body think it’s pregnant so a real pregnancy won’t happen.

If you want to #SkipPeriods, check out our #PeriodsOptional aka Hate your periods? blog post here.

DOES LORYNA HELP WITH ACNE?

Yes, Loryna can help with acne by reducing circulating androgen (testosterone) levels.  Androgens promote sebum production, an oil made by your skin. Too much sebum can lead to clogged pores, which create breeding grounds for acne.

TLDR Loryna reduces sebum production and thus acne.
