What is Cryselle Birth Control Pills?

Cryselle (also called Cryselle 28) is a combination birth control pill with 0.3mg norgestrel and 30 mcg Ethinyl estradiol. It is a prescription medication taken to prevent unwanted pregnancy. Read More

How to use Cryselle

Cryselle is very easy to use!

Simply take one pill every day, at the same time each day. Most women find that taking Cryselle before bedtime or with your largest meal of the day helps reduce nausea and other side effects. It is recommended to take your first active pill the first Sunday after your period begins.

After taking 21 days of active pills, you’ll switch to 7 inactive pills. These are reminder pills with no hormones that exist to keep you in the habit of taking your pill every day.

If you do miss one active pill , take two pills as soon as you remember. Then, continue to take one active pill for the rest of the pill pack. If you miss two active pills in a row take two pills per day for two days. However, if you miss three active pills in a row, do not take the missed pills. Instead you should use back up birth control for at least 7 days. Note that you may experience some bleeding or spotting if you miss three pills in a row.

Remember that Cryselle and other hormone based birth control cannot be used to prevent HIV infection or other sexually transmitted diseases. In order to prevent STDs, always use condoms when having sexual intercourse.

Cryselle Dosage

Cryselle birth control pills have two main active ingredients: Desogestrel (progesterone) [0.15 mg] and Ethinyl Estradiol (estrogen) [30 mcg].

Benefits of Cryselle

  • Menstrual periods shorten and flow gets lighter. If you are usually a 7 day person, it goes down to about 5 days. If you use 5 pads/tampons a day, it goes down to 3.
  • You can use it to make #PeriodsOptional. Just skip the last week of pills and go straight into the next pack. See our CEO/Founder’s talk here.
  • Reduce the risk of ovarian cysts (as in polycystic ovarian syndrome [PCOS])
  • Improves acne.

Cryselle Side Effects

Most people who take Cryselle experience no side effects. If side effects occur, they are usually mild.

Some minor side effects are: headaches, nausea, breast tenderness, fatigue, and decreased sex drive. Women who are breastfeeding should not take Cryselle because it may decrease breast milk production. Those who wear contact lenses may experience blurred vision. You may experiencve breakthrough bleeding when first taking Cryselle.

Many experience positive side effects such as: reduced acne, fewer mood swings, and lighter, easier, and less painful periods!

While very unlikely, the following serious adverse reactions can occur while taking Cryselle, including blood clots. Blood clots can travel throughout the bloodstream and block blood flow to different parts of the body. This can cause potentially life-threatening issues like deep vein thrombosis, heart attack, or stroke. Additionally, call you doctor immediately if you experience abnormal vaginal bleeding.

The good news is that the risk of serious Cryselle side effects is extremely low. Our expert birth control doctors and Pandia Health Care Advisors can answer any questions and concerns about your birth control options.

Frequently Asked Questions

DOES CRYSELLE CAUSE WEIGHT GAIN?

There is no direct link between Cryselle and weight gainSome women experience changes in their appetite that may lead to weight gain while taking Cryselle. Others may find that their bodies experience more fluid retention while taking Cryselle, even though they actually don’t gain any body fat.

ANY OTHER IMPORTANT INFORMATION ABOUT CRYSELLE?

Cryselle may interact with other medications, including prescription, over-the-counter, and/or recreational drugs, or even herbal supplements and vitamins. Always let your doctor know about all the medications/supplements/vitamins you’re currently taking before starting Cryselle. Some drugs can make Cyrselle less effective, which could lead to an unintended pregnancy.

Like other oral contraceptive pills, Cryselle does not protect against sexually transmitted infections. Our CEO and Co-Founder Dr. Yen also recommends using a back-up birth control method during the first week of using Cryselle for the first time.

WHAT PRECAUTIONS SHOULD I BE AWARE OF WITH CRYSELLE?

You shouldn’t smoke anyway, but especially not if you take estrogen containing birth control pills like Cryselle. Smoking increases the risk of serious side effects like blood clots, especially in women who are older than 35.

Cryselle may cause your body to hold on to fluid, so you might notice swelling in your fingers or ankles or slight increases in your blood pressure. Let your doctor know if you’re concerned about fluid retention or weight gain.

Don’t take Cryselle if you’re allergic to any of its ingredients. Signs and symptoms of an allergic reaction to Cryselle are rare and usually very mild and may include itching, hives, or dizziness. Serious allergic reactions to Cryselle can occur in very rare cases. Stop taking Cryselle and call 911 immediately if you experience swelling in the lips, mouth, or tongue, or if you have a hard time breathing.

Cryselle isn’t for everyone. Women with a history of certain medical conditions like heart disease, high blood pressure, kidney disease, liver cancer, or severe migraines should not take Cryselle. Our Pandia Health Care Advisors are standing by to help you figure out the best birth control method given your health history.

It’s generally easy to get Cryselle with a doctor’s prescription at any pharmacy. Talk to your doctor or speak with one of Pandia Health’s expert birth control doctors to get set up with the right birth control prescription for your health history. Our women-founded, women-led team puts our patients’ health and privacy first, so feel free to talk with us about your questions!

DOES CRYSELLE BIRTH CONTROL CAUSE INFERTILITY?

It’s a myth that Cryselle birth control causes infertility. Any woman who wants to have a baby can simply stop taking Cryselle and her normal fertility should return within 3-5 days. Talk to your doctor before stopping or changing any medications.

DOES CRYSELLE STOP YOUR PERIOD?

No, Cryselle does not stop your period. There are 28 tablets on each packet and you will have a bleed on the last 7 days of each pack (aka placebo week). If you want to skip your period you can use Cryselle for doing that but you might want to change  to another generic that doesn’t have the last week (save $ and pills). Learn more about making your #PeriodsOptional and how to skip your period here.
